A loved one has pass away: what are the steps to follow?

When the death of a family member happens in an institution, a doctor will confirm the death and complete the necessary legal documentation. If it should happen at home, dial 911 or call your family doctor to inform them. The ambulance service or the doctor will have the body transferred to an hospital, to the coroner’s office or will complete the death declaration on site (form SP-3). This document is the first one that is needed before you call the funeral home.

The SP-3 being completed, you can call us and we will proceed with the transport of the body and plan the funeral arrangements with you making sure that you have the following documents in hand:

  • the social insurance number of the deceased;
  • the location of the deceased birth and registration;
  • the name of the parents, including the mother’s maid name.

The funeral director will proceed with the recording of the death with Le Directeur de l’État civil du Québec. Also, he will plan and organize the funeral ceremony with you and prepare the necessary documents to claim, on your behalf, the death benefit payable by the Régie des Rentes du Québec if the deceased has contributed for a period of at least 10 years. Once the death is recorded, our legal partners could help you with the procedures to manage the deceased estate.

This way, the day of the ceremony, you can concentrate on the funeral itself, and live this moment with serenity.

The arrangements made with the funeral home will usually include visits at the funeral home in our celebration room or at the church that could end to the cemetery or a columbarium. Here are few suggestions to help you cope with this day:

  • free yourself of professional activities, which you are normally entitled to, according to the Québec Labor Code;
  • relax and take some time for yourself before the funeral;
  • if you have prepared a testimonial, review it to be in control, once you do it in public, you may have to deal with some emotions while doing so;
  • review the requests you have made when the arrangements were made with the funeral director: flowers, memorial cards, video presentation, music, catering, etc.;
  • if you are the person who made the funeral arrangements, be at the funeral home at least half an hour before the schedule visiting time to greet your guests, sometimes people are showing up earlier than expected;
  • during the visiting hours the funeral director and his team will be there to support you and make sure that all arrangements are delivered as planned;
  • when the ceremony starts make sure that you have your text with you and that those who will speak are present and ready to proceed;
  • when leaving for church, cemetery or columbarium, the funeral director and his team will accompany you as planned: pallbearers, limousine, etc. He will ensure a smooth transition to the final destination. At the end of the event, the team will take you back as per the prearrangements;
  • Even though receiving marks of friendship and affection from your close ones could be difficult, let them express their condolences. Thank them and keep their messages in your memories.

Now that the funerals are over, it is time for you to proceed with the closing of the deceased estate.

  1. Make sure that you have all the necessary documents in hand. Your funeral director has provided you with some documents and an overview of the most important elements of the guide published by the Government of Québec. He also gave you a copy of the death registration that has been sent to Le Directeur de l’État civil and the proof of death prepared by the funeral home.
  2. It is suggested to use the services of a notary. Then, referring on line to the guide ‘’Quoi faire lors d’un décès’’ will be a precious reference for phone numbers and several information and advices guiding you in the estate management.
  3. Do not hesitate to use the services of a psychologist. All the emotions following the death of a close friend or member of the family could be difficult to manage when going back to a normal life. It is totally normal to be emotional after the funeral. You can count on several psychological services to help you go through the difficult steps of mourning. Many employers are offering assistance programs to employees helping them to deal with the weight of the mourning and you should benefit from them. Loosing someone close can change your life in many aspects. Refer to a professional and if needed, do not hesitate to contact us as we can refer you to a professional from our network.
