Deaths

When a death occurs in an institution, a physician will certify the death and draw up the medical death certificate.

If the death occurs at home, it is important to call 911 or contact the attending physician to report this difficult time. The ambulance service or doctor can then arrange for the body to be transferred to a hospital, the coroner’s office, or complete the medical certificate of death (form SP-3) on the spot. This document is essential before contacting a funeral home.

Once you’ve received the SP-3 form, don’t hesitate to contact our funeral home. We’ll be there to accompany you, care for the deceased and help you make the necessary arrangements.

To facilitate this process, please provide the following information: the deceased’s social insurance number, place of birth and registration, as well as the names of his or her parents, including the mother’s maiden name. At your meeting, our funeral consultant will take care of registering the death with the Directeur de l’état civil du Québec. He or she will also organize the funeral according to your wishes, prepare the documents required to apply for death benefits from the Régie des rentes du Québec, included in our BEREAVEMENT SERVICE, and implement the wishes expressed in the funeral contract.

After registration, our team will be on hand to guide and support you through the estate management process.

On the day of the viewing and the day of the funeral, we want you to be able to concentrate fully on these precious moments, surrounded by your loved ones, and to go through this stage of mourning as serenely as possible. We’re with you every step of the way.

Your arrangements with the funeral home include visiting the funeral home and holding the funeral. The funeral can take place in our tribute area, in the church or, if you wish, in a place that was meaningful to the deceased – a place that held great symbolic value for him or for the family. The ceremony can then be concluded at the cemetery or in a columbarium, depending on your wishes. In order to live this day with calm and contemplation, here are a few tips we suggest:

Take care of yourself

Above all, give yourself a break. Take time off from your professional activities – the Quebec Labour Code generally provides for this right – and use this time to refocus. It’s normal to feel tired or emotional: rest and prepare yourself for this important step.

Prepare your interventions

If you plan to read a text in tribute to the deceased, take a moment to reread it and familiarize yourself with it. Emotions may overwhelm you as you read, and the better you know your text, the more comfortable you’ll feel delivering it from the heart.

Check logistical details

Review the elements discussed with the funeral director: flowers, memory bookmarks, tribute video, music choices, catering services, etc. If the funeral is to be held at a special location, make sure all logistical aspects have been validated: access, transportation, permits if applicable, site layout, etc.

Same day

If you are the person responsible for the arrangements, we advise you to arrive around 30 minutes before the start of the visits. This will allow you to welcome your loved ones in a peaceful atmosphere. During the visits, our team is on hand at all times to accompany you and ensure that all technical and logistical aspects of the ceremony go according to plan. So you can concentrate on what’s most important: enjoying the moment in the presence of others.

During the ceremony

Make sure you have the texts to read, and that the people who are to speak are present and ready. Whether the ceremony takes place at the church, in our home or in a more personal setting such as a family cottage, garden or landmark, our team is here to support you. The funeral director will coordinate the movements – limousine, pallbearers, hearse – to ensure a smooth and respectful transition to the ceremony site, and then to the place of final disposition. At the end of the day, we’ll also accompany you on your return journey, as arranged.

Get support from your loved ones

Finally, although it may be difficult at such an emotional time, allow your loved ones to show you their affection. Their expressions of sympathy and condolences are precious. Receive them with gratitude: they are part of the grieving process and often remain etched in the memory.

Once the funeral is over, there are often many administrative steps to be taken. At Bleuciel, we know how burdensome this can be, especially in times of grief. That’s why we offer an exclusive estate documentation service, designed to lighten your daily routine and let you concentrate on what’s important.

Our team takes care of the following main tasks with respect and efficiency:

  • Visitwill searchfrom official registers, to identify the deceased’s valid will.
  • Visitdeath benefit claim(public plans, insurance, etc.).
  • Visitordering a death certificatefrom the Registrar of Civil Status.
  • L’he cancellation of subscriptions, service accounts and digital presences(social networks, utilities, telecom companies, digital platforms, etc.) – support for 12 months following death.

This personalized service gives you peace of mind: we ensure that every detail is taken care of with discretion, competence and compassion.

At Bleuciel, we believe that support doesn’t stop at the end of the funeral. That’s why our administrative support is an integral part of our mission: to help you get through this time with peace of mind.

In Quebec, you have the right to make your own funeral arrangements: type of ceremony, cremation or burial, resting place, etc.

You can register your wishes :

  • in a funeral pre-arrangement contract;
  • in your will;
  • or in a clearly expressed written document.

After your death, your family has a moral and legal obligation to respect your wishes as far as possible.

If nothing has been planned, it is generally the spouse, the children and then the other relatives who will make the decisions. At BleuCiel, we help the family gather these wishes and translate them into a respectful tribute.

Before any burial or cremation, you must :

  • the death certificate has been issued;
  • a minimum delay (a few hours) must be respected, unless otherwise stipulated by law (public health, for example).

Then, burial or cremation usually takes place in the days following the death, depending on :

  • selected thanatological treatments;
  • of the planned ceremony;
  • availability of facilities (crematorium, cemetery, celebration hall).

At BleuCiel, we take care of all the coordination, so that deadlines respect the law, rituals and the family’s rhythm.

The Act respecting funeral activities strictly regulates the viewing of a body in Québec.

In practice :

  • the viewing of a body must take place in a specially equipped room owned by a licensed funeral home;
  • these places must meet standards of safety and dignity.

The idea of freely displaying a body in a private home or rented hall, without a funeral home and without supervision, is therefore generally not in line with the law.

On the other hand, it is sometimes possible to combine :

  • a celebration at another location (residence, community hall, seniors’ residence, etc.);
  • with BleuCiel taking charge of the body in an authorized and compliant environment.

We can explain what is legally permissible and offer flexible options (such as BleuCiel Flex) while staying within the law.

In Quebec, a body must be buried in a recognized cemetery or authorized burial site.

This means that we cannot legally :

  • bury a body in a backyard;
  • burial on private land not recognized as a cemetery.

These rules protect public health, the dignity of the deceased and the continuity of the resting place.

BleuCiel can help you choose a cemetery or burial site that reflects your values (traditional, ecological, religious, secular, etc.).

In Quebec, ashes must be treated with the same dignity as the body.

In general, it is possible :

  • to keep the urn at home;
  • deposit the urn in a columbarium or cemetery;
  • scatter the ashes in an appropriate place (nature, water, private land with permission), provided it does not create a nuisance and respects the dignity of the person.

BleuCiel advises you on :

  • legal options;
  • symbolic and family considerations;
  • the best way to honor the deceased while respecting the law.

Although BleuCiel does not sell pre-arrangements in the legal sense, we will sign a clear and detailed funeral services contract with you or your family at the appropriate time (at the family’s request, or at death).

This funeral services contract specifies in particular:

  • a detailed list of goods and services provided by BleuCiel (transport, care, coffin or urn, hall, celebration, cremation or burial, etc.);
  • the price of each item and applicable taxes;
  • any administrative costs, clearly identified;
  • payment terms;
  • options for adding, removing or modifying services.

This contract has been drawn up in compliance with the laws applicable to consumer affairs and funeral services in Quebec.

When you choose to finance your plan through TruStage:

  • the insurance contract is with TruStage;
  • BleuCiel remains your funeral partner, responsible for carrying out the planned services when the time comes, according to the funds available and the wishes recorded.

Our commitment:

  • transparency on the costs and limitations of each solution;
  • clearly explain the difference between a legal prearrangement and insurance-financed funeral planning;
  • give you all the information you need to make an informed decision.

Prearrangements

A funeral pre-arrangement contract is an agreement you sign during your lifetime to :

  • choose your funeral (cremation or burial, type of ceremony, coffin or urn, etc.);
  • fix services and products in advance;
  • often pay all or part of the costs now.

This contract is governed by specific Quebec legislation. It must be written, detailed, clear and given to the customer.

At BleuCiel Maison Funéraire, we :

  • explain each element in simple terms;
  • let’s take the time to clarify your wishes;
  • we’ll provide you with a complete package for you and your loved ones.

In Quebec, you benefit from a number of important protections:

  • Amounts deposited in trust: the vast majority of the money paid out is kept in a separate account, to be used at the time of death.
  • Written contract governed by law: content, compulsory information, cancellation rights.
  • Controlled cancellation penalties: the law limits what the company can withhold if you cancel.

At BleuCiel, we go one step further:

  • transparent explanations of costs;
  • no “hidden” costs;
  • revise the contract with you, sentence by sentence, if you wish.

For several years now, there has been an official register of funeral and burial pre-arrangement contracts in Quebec.

When you contact us after a death, we can :

  1. check with you the documents found in the deceased’s papers;
  2. take the necessary steps to seek a contract with the appropriate organizations and other companies, as required.

This avoids paying twice for services that have already been planned and financed.

Only licensed funeral directors may :

  • officially advise you;
  • negotiate and conclude prearrangement contracts.

BleuCiel Funeral Home:

  • we have the necessary authorizations;
  • we follow provincial standards;
  • we train our team to ensure that every encounter is both humane and legal.

People often confuse funeral prearrangements, life insurance and insurance-financed funeral planning.

Funeral prearrangements (as defined by law in Quebec)

  • This is a pre-arranged contract concluded directly with a funeral company or cemetery.
  • The contract is governed by the Loi sur les arrangements de services funéraires et de sépulture and supervised by the Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC).
  • The company must deposit the bulk of the sums in trust and register the contract in the statutory register.

BleuCiel Maison Funéraire does not enter into this type of contract.

We do not offer pre-arrangements in the legal sense of this law.

Funeral planning with TruStage

Instead, BleuCiel works with the TruStage company, which offers an insurance product dedicated to funeral expenses.

In concrete terms :

  • you plan your funeral with us (type of ceremony, cremation/inhumation, preferences, etc.);
  • the financial protection associated with this plan is provided by a TruStage insurance contract;
  • it is an insurance product, governed by the rules applicable to insurance, and not a prearrangement contract within the meaning of the Funeral Arrangements Act.

We can also coordinate this planning with your existing life insurance, if applicable.

A distinction must be made between two things:

  1. any legal pre-arrangements you may have made elsewhere;
  2. funeral planning with an insurance product such as TruStage, with which BleuCiel works.

If you already have prearrangements signed with another funeral home.

These contracts are subject to the law on funeral arrangements:

  • the amounts must be deposited in trust by the company that received them;
  • the contract must be entered in the statutory register;
  • in the event of company closure, mechanisms exist to ensure that your rights are respected and that services are provided by another company.

In this case, BleuCiel can :

  • help you understand your rights;
  • work with the company or trustee responsible to ensure continuity of services, if you choose to celebrate with us.

In the case of funeral planning with TruStage.

  • the financial element is an insurance contract with TruStage;
  • this contract is governed by insurance rules and not by the law on prearrangements;
  • should BleuCiel close or change structure, your insurance contract with TruStage continues to exist: the benefits provided remain due according to the terms of the insurance contract.

In such a scenario, families could :

  • choose another funeral service provider;
  • use the sums paid by TruStage to cover costs with this new supplier.

Today, BleuCiel is clearly positioned as :

  • a planning partner (human support, clarification of wishes);
  • a funeral service provider at the time of death;
  • in collaboration with TruStage for the financial aspect, rather than a seller of prearrangements in the strict sense of the law.

BleuCiel Maison Funéraire does not offer pre-arrangement contracts as defined by Quebec law. Financial planning for funerals is carried out in collaboration with the TruStage insurance company.
